  Pictured there on the right is the noble Bora serving some 21st-birthday cupcakes. Yes, this past Essanay Cafe Open Mic was more than an open mic event with Sarah, one of our local regulars, celebrating an alcohol-free (yes, really) 21st birthday. Even more well-attended than usual, the wine bar theatre space was abuzz right up to the last minute of the evening's proceedings. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the unique and enjoyable talents of Alex Sheh, who, having recently stopped by my Bay Street Open Mic event, popped in again to treat us with his retro jazz crooner ...

  Another great open mic at the Essanay Cafe this week. I think, if possible, this event is becoming even more popular of late. And why not? The warm weather makes the outdoor wine bar out back a great place to sit and watch the performers parade by . . . did I mention the food? Shame on me, because it's fantastic: gorgeous plates of steaming wonderfulness, tantalizing aromas wafting as they're set down at the candle-lit tables. Bistro seating encourages new friendships! Folks who've just met and the usual friendly crowd of regulars make this the most hospitable, easy-going ...

  Essanay Open Mic, 28 April 2010 Essanay Cafe, Open Mics | (0)

  This past week at the Essanay Open Mic we did something that seems to be becoming more of a regular thing: a feature performer. In this case, it was The Real Placebos, a talented local Americana instrumental band, featuring the familiar face of Pat McClellan behind that double bass (pictured on the left there). It was a great night altogether with a couple of open mic newbies (including the talented magician, Kim - another first: a magician!) and many of the old favorites we've come to know and love like the up and coming Raul Morales, whom you can see ...
